If you're willing to spend more than $1,000, the newer HP Victus 16 is a solid pick, but it's pricier. (There was a secondary SSD slot in our unit if you want to do this yourself later.) If you have the means, it's a worthwhile upgrade, as will more storage space to hold more games. On HP's site, you can update the GPU as far up as an RTX 3050 Ti. ![]() While it achieved playable scores on many of our benchmarks, you'll likely want to lower your resolution or some settings for the most stable frame rates. The GTX 1650 GPU means you'll have to turn settings down on some games. ![]() If you want to double up on work and play, you can - in our testing, the Victus 15 and its Intel Core i5-12450H did decently on productivity tests. In fact, it looks more like a business machine than a gaming laptop. In some ways, the Victus succeeds in its looks. We tested it at $799.99 with a 512GB SSD, but as of this writing, it appears that there's now a $699.99 option with a smaller, 256GB drive. HP offers it with a base configuration utilizing an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. If you're looking for something really cheap, the HP Victus 15 is a good place to start. With the best gaming laptops under $1,000, you should be able to run most games, albeit not always at their highest settings or resolution. We run benchmarks on a wide variety of gaming laptops at different price points from a swath of different brands, so we know what to look for in a PC. You may find some with a GeForce GTX 1650 or RTX 3050, but go for the RTX 4050 if you can. Some may use slightly older CPUs, too, such as 12th Gen Intel processors and Ryzen 6000 series chips. The current swath of sub-$1,000 gaming notebooks is largely powered by the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050, though you may find the RTX 4060 if prices come down or if there's a good sale. If you have more money later, you can usually add more storage or upgrade the RAM on your laptop on your own. But if your bank account needs to stay flush for other priorities, there still are options for you. A better GPU, SSD or screen will go a long way, and you're likely to get better build quality, too. But you should be able to find something to let you play some games, especially if you like esports and indie titles, which don't use as much graphics power.Īs power users, we highly recommend that if you have the means to spend a bit more, that you consider it we also maintain lists of the best gaming laptops under $1,500 and the best gaming laptops overall. ![]() ![]() (Try to avoid single-channel RAM, if you can!) You'll have to make choices about what you really want. Some systems won't have the latest-generation processors, GPUs won’t be top-of-the-line, the storage space may not be enough to hold more than a few games at once and you likely won't go above 8GB of RAM. There are going to be caveats in this price range. You'll probably have to turn down some settings, particularly on the most intensive games. There are plenty of gaming laptops for under $1,000, which will get you basics like a 1080p display, a strong CPU and a discrete, gaming-ready GPU that's enough for esports and competitive video games, along with some work when you're done playing. Besides buying games, you also need a capable machine to play them on! But you can get started without spending thousands of dollars on a new gaming laptop.
